  • Description

Kinama Hill Washing Station is a notable coffee processing facility operated by Migoti Coffee Company. Established in 2022, it is located in the Bujumbura Rural Province of Burundi, an area known for producing high-quality coffee. The station initially focused on producing natural-processed coffee, such as in this example. However, it expanded in 2023 to include a wet mill, allowing it to produce washed coffees starting from the 2024 season.

The coffee from Kinama Hill is typically Red Bourbon, a variety known for its rich and complex flavour profile. The high altitude (around 1,700 to 1,900 meters above sea level) and fertile volcanic soil contribute to the distinctive characteristics of the coffee. This example includes tasting notes like cola, blueberry, and stone fruit.

The establishment of Kinama Hill Washing Station is part of a broader effort by Migoti Coffee to improve coffee quality and provide better economic opportunities for local farmers through sustainable and efficient processing methods. Our importer, Omwani has been working with Migoti Coffee since 2020, importing over 80 tonnes of green coffee and supporting thousands of farmers.

  • Origin

Burundi's coffee industry is crucial to its economy, with smallholder farmers growing Arabica coffee, mainly the Bourbon variety, at high altitudes. This coffee is known for its bright acidity and complex flavours, making it popular in the global speciality coffee market. The industry, once tightly controlled by the government, began opening up to private investment in the 1990s, leading to the development of many washing stations focused on producing high-quality coffee.

However, the industry faces significant challenges, including political instability, climate change, and economic barriers like limited access to credit and outdated farming methods. These issues impact coffee production and farmer incomes. Despite these challenges, ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, farming practices, and sustainability offer hope for the future, as Burundi aims to enhance its position in the growing specialty coffee market.
