Kenya Jayden - Single Origin Coffee Beans | Natural Process
A natural processed, single origin coffee. Light roast, with notes of strawberry, rum, cinnamon and dark chocolate.
Description
Jaden is a naturally processed coffee from Rui Ruiru Factory, located in Mathira, Nyeri County, Kenya. The factory works closely with local smallholder farmers who cultivate coffee at elevations of 1,800 to 2,000 metres above sea level, producing coffees known for their bright acidity, sweetness and complex flavour profiles.
Originally operating under the Mathira North Cooperative, Rui Ruiru Factory was once recognised for producing exceptional Kenyan coffee. However, following the cooperative's closure in 2014, the factory gradually fell into disrepair.
In 2020, a restoration project led by village headman Charles Maina, with support from the Ministry of Agriculture, Nyeri County Government and Crowd Farm Africa, brought the factory back into operation.
Today, Rui Ruiru combines traditional coffee cultivation with modern processing techniques. For its naturally processed coffees, ripe cherries are carefully hand-harvested and slowly dried whole on raised African beds. This allows the fruit's sugars to contribute to the coffee's sweetness and complexity, creating distinctive fruit-forward flavours.
Origin
Kenya is one of Africa's most celebrated coffee-producing countries, renowned for its high-quality Arabica coffees and distinctive flavour profiles.
Nyeri County, situated in Kenya's central highlands near Mount Kenya, is particularly well suited to coffee cultivation. Its fertile volcanic soils, reliable rainfall and high elevations provide excellent growing conditions, allowing coffee cherries to mature slowly and develop complex flavours.
Coffee production in the region is largely supported by smallholder farmers, many of whom cultivate relatively small plots of land and deliver their harvested cherries to cooperative factories for processing.
The region is particularly associated with the SL28 and SL34 coffee varieties, originally developed by Scott Agricultural Laboratories. These varieties are widely valued for their exceptional cup quality and distinctive characteristics.
Rui Ruiru Factory's restoration reflects the importance of coffee production to the surrounding communities, helping to preserve the region's coffee-growing heritage while creating new opportunities for local farmers.
