Rwanda Karambi 134 Single Origin Coffee Beans | Washed Process

£8.45Price

A washed, single origin coffee. Light-medium roast, with notes of peach, lemonade and honey.

  • Description

On his recent trip to Rwanda, Darren learned that Rwanda is divided into five provinces, 30 districts and 416 sectors.

Karambi was established in 2016 and RTC took ownership the following year. 4 staff are employed full time with the addition of 60 further staff during the harvest, of whom 90% are women. 1500 farmers contribute cherry to the station and all have successfully participated in RTCs training program. Since 2017, annual production has doubled from 220 tons of cherry processed to an expected 400+ this year.

The farms surrounding Karambi are all within 3 kilometres of the station, located on steep slopes. On average farms are 4 hectare in size, with approximately 8000 trees per farm.

  • Origin

Rwanda has ideal growing conditions for coffee: high altitude, regular rainfall and volcanic soils with good organic structure.

The majority of Rwandan coffee is produced by around half a million smallholders with tiny patches of land often not much larger than one hectare. Coffee is grown in most parts of the country but, it is concentrated along Lake Kivu and the southern province.

Rwandan smallholders organise themselves into farmer cooperatives. They share the services of centralised washing stations (also known as wet mills).
